ZHAW Article: Shaping AI Responsibly
The article explains how the ZHAW School of Engineering is making Responsible AI a core part of its research, teaching, and collaboration with society. It argues that AI must be designed from the start to be ethical, fair, transparent, robust, and legally compliant - not just technically effective - because real-world AI systems can cause misinformation, discrimination, manipulation, and other harms.
ZHAW plays a leading role in its support for SCRAI, together with the universities UZH, PHZH, and ZHdK. This multi-perspective approach is crucial to advance Responsible AI as it requires technology competencies, legal expertise, understanding of organisational behaviour, team dynamics, as well as societal, design-oriented, and user-centred approaches.
The think-and-do tank SCRAI was established with funding from DIZH and has recently been organised as an independent association.
SCRAI aims not only to research Responsible AI, but also to develop concrete solutions for companies and public institutions. It supports organisations in building AI strategies, governance structures, and processes.
"The demand is high. Banks, insurers, platform providers, and state actors are increasingly using AI, but face many questions in the individual dimensions of Responsible AI," says Christoph Heitz, Professor of AI and Society at ZHAW. "SCRAI pools scientific knowledge and implementation expertise, makes it available to organisations, and organises events to connect stakeholders in Switzerland."
